A Sombre Page
In our world, many have died. Even if we didn't know them, they have been a loss to the world. Wow, that sounded really like depressing. But this is a page where I will pay tribute to all those that have died. Like actors that I really admired and such, and who I think should not have come to such an early end. And also normal people. lol.
JOHN RITTER
John Ritter was born on September 17, 1948, in Burbank, California. His full name was Jonathan Southworth Ritter. He was son to a legendary country singing musician/actor (Tex) and his wife (Dorothy Fay), who was also an actress. John was destined to be follow his parent's footsteps. He actually enrolled at Hollywood High School, and he was student body president, and became the most popular student ever.
He attended the University of Southern California, where he majored in Psychology and minored in Architecture. In 1966, before he attended college, his first TV appearance was as a contestant on The Dating Game, and he won a vacation to Mexico.
After making his first cameo appearance and with a couple of years of school under his belt, he joined an acting class taught by Nina Foch. He changed his major to Theater Arts, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama. He studied acting as well with Stella Adler at the Harvey Lembeck Comedy Workshop. He appeared in a series of stage plays between 1968 and 1969, in England, Scotland, Holland and Germany. His father was entertaining troops in Germany at the same time as his son, performing at an air base.
His actual acting debut was an episode of Hawaii Five-O, playing various roles. On Dan August, he played a campus revolutionary, in a film which also starred Burt Reynolds and Norman Fell, who later starred with him on Three's Company. He appeared as Reverend Matthew Fordwick on Tee Waltons (1972). He was invited to have a recurring role on the show. But he continued guest appearances on Medical Center, M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show, The Streets of San Francisco, Kojak, and a preacher on Rhoda, The Mary Tyler Moore Show also earning a visit.
But while working on The Waltons, he received word that his legendary father had passed away, just a day after New Year's Day in 1974.
He beat out 50 other people for a major role on the British sitcom about A Man About the House - including Billy Crystal. The first pilot was trashed, and Joyce DeWitt, an unknown actress, played the role of Janet Wood the following year, with Susan Lanier as the dumb blonde Chrissy Snow. It did better, but the producers wanted a change, and Suzanne Somers came to play Chrissy. So, Three's Company was begun.
He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award 3 times in a row, making seven Emmy nominations in his 35-year career. He was also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, on Ally MacBeal.
While working on 8 Simple Rules, as well as a few other projects, he began to feel ill while rehearsing, and was rushed to the hospital. He was diagnosed with an aorta dissection, which means an unrecognized flaw of the heart. He died on September 11, 2003, after surgery, just shy of his 55th birthday.   He was an amazing and funny actor, and his son Jason is following in his footsteps.
